San Juan Worm

San Juan Worm

It is said that this fly originates from fisherman of the San Juan River in
Mexico. It imitates aquatic blood worms that are abundant in the area. However,
it is also a very good imitation of other aquatic and terrestrial worms and thus has
been very effective at catching fish around the world.

It’s been reported to have first been tied in the 1970s though the original
designer is unknown. The pattern is traditionally tied with red chenille though
many variations exist with different colours. Popular colours include: pink,
white, and brown.

This fly is fished like a nymph in a dead drift.
